In Memory of Jack Palance 1919 - 2006.
One of the "toughest villians" in movie history, Jack Palance passed away
on the 10th November, 2006 of natural causes. He was 87.
Jack was married twice, his three children -- Holly, Brooke and Cody
(who died in 1998 of cancer) -- all dabbled in acting and appeared with
their father at one time or another. A man with few words off the set, he
owned his own cattle ranch and displayed talents as a exhibited painter and published poet.
Few people know that veteran movie actor Jack Palance was a
professional heavyweight boxer in the early 1940s. Fighting under
the name Jack Brazzo, Palance a product of Lattimer Mines, Pennsylvania,
won his first 15 fights, 12 by knockout before losing a 4th round decision
to future heavyweight contender Joe Baksi on Dec. 17, 1940. With the
outbreak of World War II, Jack Palance's boxing career ended and his
military career began. Wounded in combat, he received the purple heart,
good conduct medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. After the war
he began his long and famous motion picture career.
Jack Palance was one of the most intense and gripping villains witnessed
in 50s westerns and melodrama, and he won two Oscar nominations for
"Best Supporting Actor" for two of them. He was nominated for an
Academy Award in 1952 after portraying the ardent lover who stalks a
terrified Joan Crawford in "Sudden Fear."
In 1953, the Academy nominated him again for his role as Jack Wilson,
the swaggering gunslinger who bullies peace-loving Alan Ladd into a
bar room duel in the Western classic "Shane."
It would take a grizzled, eccentric comic performance 40 years later,
however, in "City Slicker" before he won a Academy Award.

I always liked Jack Palance. His menacing voice was unique. He certainly was a 'one-off' character. And such an interesting face. I reckon he would have been a nice person to know.
Hi Warren ~ Good post about Jack Palance. He was a good actor and a good "baddie". Apparently he was also
talented in other ways. The real bad

I still remember his his One-handed pushups on the stage when he received his oscar.
Jack Palance was a wonderful actor. I was saddened to hear of his death. All the great ones are leaving us, aren't they ??
